Sports Minister demands Bharat Ratna For Dhyan Chand

NEW DELHI: The Sports Minister recently wrote a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office where they requested Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand.

Late Dhyan Chand who was a hockey legend and according to sports ministry he should be given India’s highest civilian honour.

Sports Minister Vijay Goel confirmed the news that he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said ,”Yes, we have written to the Prime Minister about Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand. Conferring the honour posthumously will be a fitting tribute to his exceptional service to the country,” said Goel.

It is not the first time when the Ministry has demanded Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand. Since Dhyan Chand helped India in winning three gold medals at the Olympics (1928, 1932, and 1936).

While during the UPA rule in 2013, the Sports Ministry had selected the hockey wizard for this honour over cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar.

However later in the same year, it was announced that Sachin Tendulkar will be the first sportsperson who will receive this award.

When Goel was asked Dhyan Chand, who passed away in 1979, should have given the Bharat Ratna before Sachin Tendulkar Goel said: “I would not want to comment on this as it is not fair to comment about sports persons of such legendary stature. You cannot measure achievements of Dhyan Chand with any award. He is simply beyond that.”

As I have already said it earlier that, Prime Minister is the one who will take the final call on this subject. He personally wants India to emerge as a sporting power. That is only reason why he has been giving a lot of emphasis to sports.
